For some, the traditional college experience — complete with dorm life, study groups, and campus events — is exhilarating.

But for those wanting to earn their degree quickly, early college days can be a drag.

Many eager students accelerate their education by choosing to test out of college credits.

Why Should You Test Out of College Credits?

Whether you're a high school student aiming to jump-start your career or a working professional returning to school, testing out of college credits can be a game-changer.

Here are a few reasons why earning college credit by examination is worth considering:

  • Save on Tuition: The average college course from a 4-year public university costs $1218 per semester. Credit-by-exam options are often more economical, even with the cost of prep courses.
  • Accelerate Your Education: Testing out of lower-level courses can help eager degree-seekers get into the meat of their major and graduate sooner.
  • Avoid Redundancy: Earning college credits through exams helps students bypass subjects they already understand and prevents time wasted on review.

Earning credit by examination can be challenging, but worthwhile. Learning how to test out of college courses can help you determine your ideal path.

Top 5 Ways to Earn College Credits

There are many methods to earn credits, each with benefits and drawbacks. Here are the top five ways to pass college classes through alternative paths.

1. Advanced Placement (AP)

Advanced Placement (AP) exams take place once a year, typically in May. These College Board-governed exams assess knowledge gained from an AP course and impact your final class grade. AP courses are available only to high school students and are often offered at no cost for students through their high school. The exam itself is taken at a testing center and costs roughly $100.

2. College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams are a popular choice for busy, degree-seeking professionals or students wanting to forgo traditional AP classes since there are no prerequisite courses. The College Board administers CLEP tests and credits are easily transferable. Additionally, scores don’t count against your grade point average, and if needed you can retake the test every three months.

3. Dual Credit Classes

Some high school students have the option of enrolling in college courses and receiving dual credit. These courses may be held at the high school or college campus. Cost and credits earned depend on state requirements. Do your research to ensure this option suits you before enrolling.

4. International Baccalaureate (IB)

Like AP classes, International Baccalaureate (IB) courses are offered through high schools and run the length of a typical school year. Students are assessed at the end of the course and, depending on their grade, earn general education credits for college.

5. DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST)

These exams cover more than 30 subject areas and are offered throughout the year at independent testing centers. Similar to CLEP, the DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST) does not require a prep course. Though DANTES is a military branch, DSSTs are open to anyone seeking college credit.

Not every option is right for everyone. While AP and IB classes work for many high school students, this route is inaccessible for others. Tests like the CLEP are excellent choices for working professionals, independent learners, and high school students who don’t have sufficient access to AP. Many people enroll in prep courses to help ensure testing success.
